AI Summary This summary was generated by AI from the bill text. AI can get information wrong.
This bill would make it easier for parents, guardians, and other authorized representatives to place a credit freeze for a protected consumer, such as a child. A credit freeze helps block new lenders from seeing a person’s credit file, which can help prevent identity theft and fraud. The bill says consumer reporting agencies must put the freeze in place quickly and without charging a fee when the request is made by phone, secure online method, or mail, as long as the requester provides the needed proof and documents.
- Credit reporting companies would have to place the freeze within 3 business days after getting a complete request from the child’s or protected person’s representative.
- They would also have to tell the other major credit reporting companies about the request within 3 business days.
- Any other credit reporting company that gets that notice would then have to place the freeze within 3 business days after receiving it.
- The changes would take effect 18 months after the bill becomes law.
