AI Summary This summary was generated by AI from the bill text. AI can get information wrong.
This bill would let people with federal student loans postpone payments while they are in a medical or dental internship or residency program, and it would stop interest from building up during that time. In simple terms, doctors and dentists still in training could get a break on their loan payments without their debt growing larger because of interest. The bill changes current student loan rules to create this special interest-free deferment for these trainees.
- It applies to borrowers serving in a medical internship, dental internship, medical residency, or dental residency program.
- During the deferment, borrowers would not have to make regular payments on the principal of the loan.
- Interest would not accrue on the covered federal student loans during this deferment period.
- The bill amends the Higher Education Act of 1965 and creates this rule even if other parts of the law would say differently.
