AI Summary This summary was generated by AI from the bill text. AI can get information wrong.

This bill would change the federal court rules for class action lawsuits so that cases claiming workers were wrongly treated as independent contractors could not be brought as class actions. Its main goal is to shield gig economy companies and small businesses that rely on contractor work from expensive group lawsuits. In simple terms, it would make it harder for workers to sue together in one large case over whether they should have been classified as employees instead of contractors.

  • It would amend the federal civil procedure rules that control when class action lawsuits can be filed in federal court.
  • The new rule would block class actions that are based on claims that workers were misclassified as independent contractors.
  • Supporters of the bill would likely see it as a way to reduce legal costs and uncertainty for businesses that use contractor-based work.
  • The bill was introduced in the House and sent to the Judiciary Committee for review.

Official Summaries

Protect the Gig Economy Act of 2025

This bill expands the list of preliminary requirements that must be satisfied before a class action lawsuit may be brought in federal court.

Specifically, before a party may bring a class action lawsuit in federal court, the court must first determine that a new, fifth requirement has been met: that the claim does not allege misclassification of employees as independent contractors.
